Drupal Conversion:
The OTSA site is in the process of being converted into drupal, shamelessly hijacking ideas (and code) from COD and OpenScholar. The board decided that in order to facilitate cross-disciplinary interaction among Eastern Orthodox scholars, and raise the profile of its growing number of members, the society needs to embrace new media and social networking. The site will be implemented in stages. Initally, the current site wil be converted into drupal. Site members will be able to post their own news items, indicate their areas of academic expertise, and maintain their own list of publications online. A complex tagging system allows society members to see other members with similar interests, and membership to related academic societies. This may be used to develop discussion forums around special topics.
Using COD and Views, the site will allow online sign-ups for the annual meeting, and approved abstracts will automatically be published to an online schedule and meeting program, highlighting the ongoing scholarship of society members. In addition, ubercart allows for online meeting and membership payments. Eventually, an onilne journal may be added, based on the great work of folks and Open Journal Systems.
Key Drupal Modules/Features:
- COD
- Views
- Features
- Context
- Panels
- Ubercart
Original Implementation:
The OTSA site is currently built in html and php. It uses a variety of server-side includes which makes updating the site a snap. The site includes Google's handy-dandy site specific Ajax search feature. The most exciting (well, for me, the designer) will be the upcoming use of MIT's Exhibit project to make an interactive bibliography of Eastern Orthodox authors.
Features:
- PHP server-side includes
- Google site-specific search function
- Live Google Calendar
